What’s your intention or thought process when you create and share a piece of content on social media?
Perhaps you’re conscious of showing up regularly so the algorithm doesn’t forget about you, or trying to tie your content to current trends to help extend your reach.
While both of these approaches have their place, they also fall into the category of “feeding the beast”; you’re using up your energy creating content that’s really just adding to your followers’ daily CONSUMPTION (aka, their mindless scroll).
I’m quite certain none of us would take joy from the thought that the content we’ve spent hours creating is being mindlessly scrolled past by our audience.
What we really want from our audience is CONNECTION, right?
Our goal should be to shift our content and our focus from a place of “adding to consumption” to “generating connection”, because that’s where the magic happens.
Here’s 3 steps you can try to achieve this:
1. Be human. Stop trying to fit yourself inside a trend that feels yuck and inauthentic. Be unapologetically you in every way.
2. Focus on topics that bring value to your audience and serve them well by sharing THAT.
3. Let the “trends” be part of your thought process only AFTER you have a content idea in mind that you feel good about and that ticks the above two boxes!
When we go back to our “why”; why we started our businesses and why we continue to show up and serve no matter how hard it gets…. deep down it will be tied in some way to connection.
Your WHY is a wealth of connection-centered content ideas.
If you’re struggling for inspiration at the moment, it might be time to give it a visit and see what ideas it stirs up.
