I read a post the other day that said “being at capacity in your business and turning clients away isn’t a flex. It’s a sign you need to grow your team.”.
I found myself a little disappointed—and annoyed, if I’m honest—while reading it, because while expanding your team to “stop leaving money on the table” is ONE option in this scenario, it shouldn’t be perceived as the only one.
Call me an anti-hustler but for me success, at this stage of my life, isn’t defined by MORE; more money, more clients, more employees, more notoriety.
Success for me looks like a work schedule that gives me the freedom to help out at the school’s Mother’s Day Stall, attend an activity in Lydia’s classroom, volunteer at the athletics carnival and join Jacob’s preschool for an afternoon tea, all of which were on the calendar this week. (It was an abnormally busy week, to be clear. 😂)
I’ve been in business 5 years this year and while on paper it will be the first year my business hasn’t grown, in reality it’s feeling more enjoyable and sustainable than ever.
I don’t want to hire a team and manage people.
I don’t want the responsibility of paying others’ salaries.
I don’t want my business to continue growing at the rate it has.
And that’s okay!
If your goal in your business is scalability and growth, go for it! That’s fantastic! But if it’s not, please know that not desiring growth doesn’t mean you lack drive, ambition or vision.
This ☝️is 100% a pep talk I’ve been given by coaches many times in my life, and I feel like I finally believe it enough to say it aloud and share.
You don’t need permission to do business in a way that aligns with what you desire—with what success looks like for you. Do it your way, always. After all, that’s why you got into business in the first place, wasn’t it?
