Here’s 3 tips to help you get your website copy sorted if you can’t afford to hire a copywriter.
✏️ 1. Remember who you are communicating with.
Your website is for your ideal client or customer — NOT YOUR COMPETITOR. The biggest mistakes I see with website copy is when people have focussed on what others in their industry are doing instead of directing their attention to their potential client. Ask yourself: “What is my target audience struggling with? How can I provide a solution for them? That’s the message you need to share.
✏️ 2. Use the language of your ideal client.
Don’t get caught up in industry jargon or phrases that your colleagues might use. You want to communicate in a way that is easily understood by your ideal website visitor. They should feel relieved / inspired / excited when they read your website… not overwhelmed / intimidated / confused.
✏️ 3. Seek out website feedback.
Find people that fall into your target audience and ask them to review your web copy for you. Ideally, sit with them as they use your site and ask them to talk you through their thought process. Did they click where you wanted them to click? Did they stop and read the lines that were the most important, or do you need to make those stand out more? Did they understand the CTAs (Call To Actions) throughout the site? Can they communicate back to you what you offer? Did they sign up for your Lead Generator so you could capture their email address?
SIDE NOTE: If you already have an established website but it isn’t generating inquiries or orders like you had hoped… a Website Review is a great place to start. It’s cheaper than a full website copy write and great for an objective opinion on where you could make some changes to clarify your message a little more.
“Well that’s really helpful but….. Can you (re)write my website for me instead?”
I sure can.
As a former journalist, writing is my happy place and I venture into that part of my brain as often as possible! So often, in fact, I now have two of my 3 days each week devoted to marketing copywriting.
