When I say “LinkedIn is a great marketing tool”, I’m going to guess you roll your eyes and think one (or all!) of the following…
Did I read your mind?! Hehe.
I was having a conversation with my monthly marketing accountability group, Marketing Matters, about diversifying our social media platforms of choice, and the question came up: “Well what’s the go with LinkedIn? Is that something we should be considering?”
So I called in the expert! LinkedIn guru Kate Merryweather came along to teach us how to “Learn to love LinkedIn”.. And you know what? I think she might have succeeded!
Read on for 5 things you probably didn’t know about LinkedIn… that might just persuade you to give it a try—or at least a little more of your attention.
LinkedIn Fact #1 LinkedIn has a content deficit problem
LinkedIn has more users than content. In other words there’s lots of people there to engage, but not enough content for them to engage with. Have valuable content to share? There’s an audience waiting to hear it.
LinkedIn Fact #2 The algorithm is (more) friendly.
Remember the “glory days” of Instagram when everyone saw your content? LinkedIn is still like that. Your content has longevity, and quality content can continue to generate engagement long after it’s been posted. (And we’re not talking hours here… we’re talking days, if not weeks, later.)
LinkedIn Fact #3 It’s where your clients are.
A common excuse for ignoring LinkedIn as a marketing platform is that “no one else uses it”. What we usually mean by “no one else” is “our competitors”. BUT just because your competitors don’t use LinkedIn doesn’t mean that your ideal client doesn’t.
Millennials, aged 27 – 42, make up 60% of LinkedIn’s users. About 20% of users are between 18 and 24. Only 2% are 55 and older.
LinkedIn Fact #4 It’s had a “glow up” since you last checked.
When did you last check out LinkedIn? If you set up a LinkedIn profile 5+ years ago and haven’t visited it since, now’s the time to return and take another look.
There’s plenty of creators sharing great content on LinkedIn, and it’s become so much more than the “corporate networking platform” you think it is.
LinkedIn Fact #5 Your profile shows up in a Google search.
Yep, read that again. If people search (or stalk) your name online, there’s a very high likelihood your LinkedIn profile will be one of the top results! If you haven’t updated your profile in 5+ years, this might make you cringe… but why not see it as an excellent opportunity to give your profile a refresh to show your authority and boost your credibility.
