Here’s something I really dislike about writing website copy….
Unless that copy gets handed over to a killer designer, you have zero control over its effectiveness.
You see, great copy and great design go hand in hand. Investing in one without the other is truly—in my humble opinion—a waste of money.
It doesn’t matter how incredible your website *looks* if it doesn’t communicate your value and explain to your audience what you do, how you can help them and how they can get it.
Amazing copy will fall completely flat without good design to bring it to life.
That’s why I get “super duper excited” (as my 3-year-old would say), when I have the opportunity to collaborate with talented designers like SJ from Human Brand Story, who I worked with for Andrew Leitch and Jacinta McDonell’s business, Brave Spaces.
SJ and I have worked on several projects together over the past two years and I love that the entire process feels collaborative. While working on copy, I’m able to throw in my ideas of how I imagine particular sections of text being represented visually. Similarly, SJ will come back to me once she starts designing and finds sections that appear too long and need an edit, or areas where an additional headline or pull-out quote is needed.
I’ve had the exact same working relationship with brand and web designer Julia from Luminous Lines Creative for 4 years now, and locally here in Newcastle with Emma from Blackout Creative, and I promise you—it makes all the difference!
If you’re in the process of updating your website and are wondering who to work with, here’s my #1 piece of advice: Ask web designers which copywriters they recommend, and ask copywriters which web designers they recommend! When you find the crossover, you’ve hit the bullseye.
