Are you tired of the #beauthentic message when it comes to marketing?
The hashtag itself feels like a trend circa 2016 or so…. Right?
Personally, I don’t like the idea that being authentic in your marketing is a “trend” you have to embrace. Even the word “authentic” has begun feeling a little icky to me, because it’s become associated with a lot of INAUTHENTIC content.
What it’s *meant* to stand for though, I agree with. So rather than turning my nose up at the idea, I’ve reframed how I think about it. Instead of focusing on being authentic, I focus on being GENUINE.
Is there even a difference, you ask? Maybe not.. It depends on the definition you find. 😂 But here’s how I think about it:
AUTHENTIC: Being true to yourself — how you relate to yourself. (It’s more insular. It’s just about you.)
GENUINE: Your honest and sincere way of connecting with and relating to others. (It’s about how you serve.)
Focusing on how you can be genuine directs your attention away from yourself and towards how you can best serve others (while still “being yourself” 😉).
At the end of the day… it’s just a word, sure. But I believe words matter, and finding the ones that resonate with you and help you show up and market with confidence…. Well those words are powerful.
Does this resonate with you? Let me know in the comments.
